LOCAL HISTORY

With the high demand of copper during World War I, the DuPont Company started a manufacturing plant and built the company town of Ramsay. The plant could produce 750,000 tons of dynamite per month. After the war ended, demand for dynamite dropped and DuPont closed the Ramsay plant in 1921. The settlement of Ramsay remained small through the 1920s. The town was sold in the 1940s and quality and quantity of homes improved, transforming the company town into a Butte suburb.

In Butte, you may have heard of the famous Berkeley Pit site with its stripes of multi-colored earth stretched above the town. This open pit copper mine was opened in 1955 and was operational until its closure in 1982.
